Nick dismounted with the Carsonsâ son clutched in his arm. The kid loved riding, his high-pitched screeches still ringing in Nickâs ears. Nancy Carson held out her arms for her son, her smile as proud as his.
âThank you, Nick. I would only trust a few people with Joeyâs welfare.â
The local veterinarian and his wife had visited Spurs once since heâd joined, their two young children keeping them home Anson Carson told him once when heâd been out to tend a wounded horse. âIâm glad Iâm among them. Heâs not too young to start riding lessons, and I think some stables have a few Shetlands to start the little ones out with. Iâm sure Anson knows which ones.â Noticing Melinda heading his way, he tipped his hat. âEnjoy the afternoon, Darcy.â
âYou have a great turnout, and that food looks good. Catch you later.â
Leaning against the corral fence, Nick hooked his right boot heel on the lower rail and bent his elbows to brace his arms on the top. He kept his hat lowered because Melinda was too good at reading his expressions, and he didnât doubt the churning need tightening his body was reflected on his face. Want was too mild to describe the ache heâd carried for her since they first met at his precinct. Her wide blue eyes had reflected the horror and fear of witnessing her fatherâs murder, but a determined glint accompanied her forceful insistence on testifying, even after the risks were laid out for her.
He would have committed several ethical violations if heâd seduced her back then. As it was, heâd crossed a line that last night, one he didnât regret, not then, and not now, considering her mistrust was keeping them from picking up where theyâd left off.
Now here she was, coming toward him with those long legs heâd fantasized wrapped around him closing the gap, the look on her face curious with a hint of doubt. His cock jerked, and his palm itched, wishing he could haul her into the tack room, bend her over a sawhorse, shove those shorts down, and take her mind off her worries. From the way her nipples peaked under her thin tee, her body was on board with his thinking, but, from her face, her mind was still wallowing in distrust.
âYouâre good with kids,â she said, halting in front of him. In her sneakers, her head came to his chest, and she craned her neck to glance under his hat. âYouâre also good at keeping secrets. Lisa and Skye told me you planned this impromptu gathering for me. Why?â
Nick removed the straw sprig he was chewing on and tossed it on the ground before thumbing his Stetson up. âI would think the answer obvious, but then youâre so distrustful, you canât see whatâs right in front of you.â He saw the moment the lightbulb went off in her head.
âYou planned all thisââshe waved her arm behind herââso everyone would know if I decided to stay here.â
âExactly. If you
